This winter we did some of our first songbird banding in addition to a number of raptors. We were lucky to get a great movement of boreal Finches this winter, at Belle Isle we were graced by a flock of Common Redpolls. We banded about 25 of these charismatic little birds before they departed for the north. Some of the other birds we banded over the winter were: Long-eared Owl, Barred Owl, American Kestrel and American Tree Sparrow. Some of our banding efforts look to understand the long term use of the reservation by targeted overwintering species. Pictures by: Nanci St.George and Katherine Say-Wittgenstein.
